Everything started out in 1969 with the construction works for a bed and breakfast. Back then, Obertauern was already on its way to becoming one of the leading winter sports resorts of Austria. Funiculars were built, slopes were prepared and a tourist infrastructure was gradually beginning to grow. In 1970, Inge and Franz Pöllitzer opened their bed and breakfast establishment “Montana”. Offering 28 beds, the B&B was still a two-man (woman) business as Franz Pöllitzer was still working for the police.

In 1977, works were started on the brickwork of today’s Hotel Montana. In 1987, the building was finished and “Hotel Montana” was ready to open its doors to the first guests. Back then, the hotel offered 50 beds and had 10 staff members, who were attending to the visitors’ every need. Five years later, the attic was reconstructed, increasing the contingent of available beds to 70. In 1994, the hotel was additionally equipped with an underground car park, an indoor swimming pool and 15 more apartments, 2 studio rooms and 2 single rooms. At the same time, the dining room and lobby area were modified and renovated. After these reconstruction works were finished, Hotel Montana offered a total of 107 available beds.

In 2003, the hotel was equipped with an additional gym as well as with several rooms offering billiard, computer and table tennis facilities. In 2006, the hotel once again underwent some changes, resulting in a newly built conservatory with a buffet, an enlarged bar and a bigger kitchen.

Today, 22 staff members are working at the Hotel Montana and for now we think that our hotel has reached the perfect size. We are not planning any further enlargements in the near future, as we want to preserve the personality of the house and think that our current size ensures ideal and personal contact with our guests.
